Most oysters are farmed and the main producers are the USA, Northern Canada, Morocco, South Africa, Greece and a few other European countries.
Oysters are imported into Malta from various producers in the EU and are available all year round as fresh, refrigerated or processed products. It is not yet farmed here.
This oyster is a protandric hermaphrodite which means that it changes sex twice in a season.
There is a relatively small amount of farming related to this species. The future of oyster farming depends on whether or not a disease-resistant strain is produced through genetic selection.
