In Maltese waters, it is fished using bottom trawlers or bottom longlines.

Availability

Common Dentex reproduce in May. Between April and June, adults move closer to the coast in small groups to reproduce within warm shallower waters. It is at this time that most individuals are caught.

Facts

The name ‘Dentex’ comes from the presence of large predatory teeth. They have canine teeth, and highly developed 4-6 anterior teeth in each jaw.

Our suggestion

There is very little information about this species, and the status of its population is unknown. Methods such as bottom trawling are highly destructive and non-selective so fish for tomorrow suggests that it is best to Avoid eating Dentex.
